There was a time in model history when heroin chic was both literal, hyperbolic and perfectly acceptable within the modeling community. Now, it’s become more stigmatic than when the fashion photography world used to shun you for being fat. The latest case in point is France attempting to pass legislation on the matter.
That’s right, discrimination against “excessively” thin people (as if that’s a thing) is the latest cause du jour within the Ministry of Health, which is imposing a strict law on modeling agencies that would require any model hired to furnish proof of their Body Mass Index being over 18 (and their age being under). Any company in violation of the law will be fined heavily (pardon the word choice)–$79,000 to be exact.
Although the legalization of this type of “anti-thin” enforcement has yet to pass, it’s highly likely that the French government, communist leanings that it has, will soon approve the measure, thereby paving the way for obese models in the future (even though Anna Nicole already did that). Because fashion trends are nothing if not extreme.
