Tina Fey’s May 7th appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman found her stripping her beaded black and blue dress to show off an ornate conglomerate of shapewear seeming to function as a system of levers and pulleys. Posing as confidently and smugly as she could, Fey showed off a front that said “Bye Dave” and a back that said “#lastdressever,” the hashtag a reference to the promise that she would never put on a dress for another talk show host again.
Considering Tina Fey’s alter ego, Liz Lemon, and her constant mockery of older women who choose to seek attention by putting their bodies on display (e.g. Jenna Maroney and Madonna), this shapewear showoff seems to be a bit on the hypocritical side. In addition to Fey’s own double standard about being allowed to reveal her body while other women in her age bracket can’t, the media is equally as grotesque in what they will “permit” older women to do.

Indeed, the only permissible way a woman over 40 can expose her body is if it’s presented in a comical manner, which is exactly what Fey has pandered to in her presentation of herself. Heaven forbid she could make a sincere attempt at being sexual lest she endure the same kind of condemnation that Madonna has (particularly in the wake of her Drake kiss). The claim Fey constantly makes of being a feminist is, thus, in direct opposition to her behavior of self-mocking her body.
