The Amy Schumer & Jennifer Lawrence Romance Has Already Been Done By Madonna & Sandra Bernhard

In keeping with America’s obsession with celebrity culture, people have a tendency to get very excited about two famous women being friends. Whether this has to do with the fact that famous women are rarely capable of having friends because of how large their egos are (notice that Kim K and Paris Hilton thing didn’t last?) or simply because two celebrities are more fabulous than one is left to the interpreter.

The latest publicized friendship to take the U.S. by storm is that between Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer, which first captivated audiences after photos and videos of their vacation together in the Hamptons surfaced. Excitement continued when J. Law announced she was co-writing a screenplay with Schumer in which they play sisters. The friendship continued to take on mythic status when they appeared onstage to dance together to Billy Joel singing “Uptown Girl” at Wrigley Field last night–in keeping with the annoying trend certain musicians seem to keep employing wherein they bring other celebrities onstage.

Not only are these random attempts at publicizing their friendship somewhat obnoxious, but it’s also a pale comparison to the ultimate female celebrity friendship that already had everyone atwitter over speculations that the two were lesbians together: Madonna and Sandra Bernhard.

At least they had the gumption to keep things interesting with those sexual gyrations at events like Don’t Bungle the Jungle or the bizarreness of them dressing in the same outfit and appearing on David Letterman. Lawrence and Schumer are like a pair of girl scouts in contrast, dancing sexlessly on Billy Joel’s piano and provoking zero thought. So to those female celebrities thinking of attracting attention by befriending another, take a page from Madonna and Sandra Bernhard’s book, not Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer’s (who, incidentally, is opening for Madonna’s tour during the NYC dates).
