Broad City Heats Up With Season 2 Premiere

It’s rare that a great show is given the accolades it deserves and even rarer still that a show lives up to the fanfare surrounding it. Broad City, however, is just such a rarity. On last night’s season two premiere, entitled, “In Heat,” Ilana and Abbi return to highlight the surrealism of living in New York City during the inexplicable hellishness of the summer weather (a phenomenon that seems lightyears away from our current winter perspective).

To drive home the point that New York has its own separate non-etiquette from the rest of the U.S., the show opens as Ilana and Abbi just barely catch the train, navigating their way through the disgusting bowels of public transportation humanity–ranging from a pregnant woman to people eating to showtime to a Hasidic congregation (Ilana fulfills everyone’s ultimate fantasy by slapping the seriousness off one of them with a swift ass smack).

On the romance front, Abbi shoves herself into a new pair of pants at a Top Shop dressing room while discussing pussy and ass eating Colin Farrell porn with Ilana. Much to their surprise, there’s a line of mothers and their children waiting to get in the dressing rooms who overheard it all. Ilana’s response? “We love New York moms.”

Further accenting the bizarre, Abbi ends up sleep raping her date, Male Stacy (Seth Rogen), after he passes out from heat exhaustion in her bed. This gives Ilana the delightful opportunity to call Abbi a “stone cold rapist.” Meanwhile, a quest to get an air conditioner at Bed, Bath & Beyond goes awry when they leave it on the corner in order to hail a cab. And this is just one of the many seemingly minuscule struggles of daily New York life in the summer that Ilana and Abbi showcase with pitch perfect comedic absurdity.

The episode’s hijinks continue with the reclaiming of Ilana’s old air conditioner from her former NYU dorm, now inhabited by a group of three guys. In order to get in, Ilana tries to play the lesbian discrimination card with the security guard, then the straight discrimination card after he’s unmoved. He responds, “You’re all straight and you’re all gay,” and then lets them in. In the end, their struggle proves all for naught as Bevers (John Gemberling) leaves one of his adopted cats in Abbi’s apartment, causing her and Male Stacy to jump in shock upon seeing it and then knock the air conditioner out of the window. But so goes life during a cutthroat NYC summer.
