While Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale have been rumored to have their troubles in the past, no one ever expected that they would call it quits after passing the ten year mark (a notorious curse made palpable by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner).
Not only were Rossdale and Stefani a match seemingly made in 90s alt rock heaven (the two first got together in 1996, when Rossdale’s band, Bush, was briefly bigger than No Doubt), they were also stylistically in sync. These rare compatibility traits in the annals of celebrity coupling seemed way too good to be true–and apparently were. Stefani was obviously the one to file for the divorce on Monday, August 3rd when she realized, to paraphrase a quote from Norm MacDonald on SNL, “Hey, I’m Gwen Stefani.”
In spite of thirteen years of “making it work” (a.k.a. Gwen having various and ample projects to keep her busy and distracted), the duo released a Jen and Ben-esque statement about how they plan to remain partners in parenthood even though they’re no longer partners in marriage, and that the media should respect their privacy at this time. It’s hardly a placating sentiment for those who still wanted to believe that love could last so long as there was enough money to go around.
