It seems somewhat ironic that HBO, the network that’s been so far up Girls‘ asshole for so long, it’s hard to imagine they ever could’ve noticed any other Brooklyn narrative, is now picking up High Maintenance for a six-episode stint.
Whether or not this means HBO will continue with the series after the six episodes is irrelevant. Creators Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfield have already made a deal with the devil. As Sinclair himself stated, “We have been growing this show organically for three years now.” Emphasis on the word organically. With HBO in the mix, it seems likely that High Maintenance is going to start to take a turn for the Girls version of organic.
Nonetheless, the duo insists, “We are elated to bring it into full maturity at HBO.” First of all, financing does not full maturity make. If anything, it’s been the lack of budget that’s been keeping Sinclair and Blichfield’s work so taut and Brooklyn resonant. With a fat cat involved, their metaphorical leanness is about to be obliterated. And fans of the show may need a toke to cope.
