Hilary Duff, who seems to be going through her rebellious phase at 27, has changed vastly since her heyday as Lizzie McGuire. Recently moved to Brooklyn, starring in a recently premiered show called Younger and showcasing blue hair, Duff has a new album to go with her new persona. But, of course, all new personas are really just repackaged ones.
The third single from her forthcoming album, “Sparks,” packs a theoretical punch in that it’s produced by Bloodshy & Avant and co-written by Tove Lo. It even accomplishes that rare feat: carrying off whistling as part of a chorus. And yet, it sounds as though Duff hasn’t really evolved too far from her days of singing “Come Clean.”
With lyrics like, “Turn the lights down low and kiss me under the dark/’Cause when you’re touching me baby I see sparks,” Duff continues to highlight a more child-like interpretation of romance. Plus, it’s kind of ripping off Bob Marley.
Duff’s fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., is expected to be released later this year. But based on “Sparks” and the prior singles, “Chasing the Sun” and “All About You,” it seems that while Duff hasn’t matured all that much musically, she’s at least bringing back some of those early 00s good times. Since we all know Lindsay Lohan can’t be bothered with her music career again.
