Recent news of an “amicable split” between Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter has left film enthusiasts and love optimists alike wondering if a long-lasting relationship is even remotely possible in this life. Even in spite of living in separate quarters of a conjoined house, this amount of time apart still wasn’t enough to maintain the strength of their thirteen-year partnership.
Rumors of Burton’s infidelity came a year ago after being pictured kissing a “mysterious” blonde (a.k.a. his production assistant), but apparently, both have had open affairs with other people. Adhering to the cliche, “opposites attract,” Burton was known for being the silent, eccentric one, while Bonham Carter was more outspoken, “normal” one.
Perhaps meeting on the set of Planet of the Apes was somewhat foretelling of a macabre end for them. But, on the plus side, at least we were given collaborations like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Corpse Bride (though we were also given the unfortunate collaborations of Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Nonetheless, the split of these two so seemingly made for each other souls doesn’t bode very well for the rest of us.
