Nicki Minaj, usually someone Madonna would deem an #unapologeticbitch, has done something even more shocking than creating a music video chock full of Nazi imagery: she’s decided to back down (booty pun intended). In the wake of criticism galore from those offended by her “art,” Minaj took to Twitter on November 11th, insisting, “I didn’t come up with the concept, but I’m very sorry and take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. I’d never condone Nazism in my art.” Except that this is exactly what she did. So why try to renege now?
The director of the video, Jeff Osbourne, who may make or break his career with this video, was conversely vehement in his defense of the work, stating, “First, I’m not apologizing for my work, nor will I dodge the immediate question. The flags, armbands, and gas mask (and perhaps my use of symmetry?) are all representative of Nazism.” At least he’s not trying to pull the wool over our eyes, Minaj style–not that you really could considering how overt the Nazi regalia/paraphernalia is.
While it’s nice for Minaj to try to placate her detractors, she would have been better off sticking to her guns on this one. Lord knows she could suffocate any further complaints with that backside of hers.
