It’s been too long since a truly raunchy and empowered sex song—a “fuck me” song, if you will—has been released by two women (this is likely because, in all honesty, it hasn’t been feeling like a very “sexy time” of late). Arguably not since 2020’s “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. And now, just in the nick of time before 2024’s end, Shygirl and Yseult have emerged to deliver the perfect remedy: “Fuck Me.” Or, as your autocorrect will want to say, “Duck Me.” Which isn’t totally off the mark considering the accompanying video for the single.
Directed by Ferina, the visuals for “Fuck Me” find Shygirl and Yseult strutting around in the park along with the ducks and pigeons (giving the latter two groups plenty of competition). And while it might not seem “on theme” with lyrics like, “Yeah boy I know ya gonna waste my time/I look too good and I feel too ah/Trust me, I’m too fuckin’ fine/Bride price set too much too high/Window shopper til you die/I look too good and I feel too ah,” it actually is when taking into account the preening mating rituals of many an animal species, particularly birds. The braggadocious aura of these lyrics are in keeping with Shygirl’s usual manner, as recently evidenced on another collaboration she did with Saweetie: “Immaculate” (a runner-up to “Fuck Me” in terms of being the “WAP” of the year).
As for Yseult, she contributes a touch of French panache to the track with her sensual, “mood queen” verses, “Deux du mat/Je t’appelle, je me sens pousser des ailes/Ne penses pas que tu me manques/Baby I just want to fuck/Ta main autour de mon cou/Jeux de langue/Bisous bisous/Mes deux cuisses qui se resserre/Baby I just want to fuck/Je la joue technique, tema la tactique/Ton bijoux s’excite, vient la que je t’explique/Ne pense pas que tu mmm/Baby I just want to fuck/Je la joue technique, tema la tactique/Ton bijoux s’excite, vient la que je t’explique/Ne pense pas que tu me mmm.”
Sentiments that translate to, enfin: “Two in the morning/I call you, I feel like I’m growing wings/Don’t think that I miss you/Baby I just want to fuck/Your hand around my neck/Tongue games/Kisses kisses/My two thighs that tighten/Baby I just want to fuck/I play it technical, tactics/Your jewelry [jewels] gets excited, come here I’ll explain/Don’t think that you mmm/Baby I just want to fuck/I play it technical, tactics/Your jewelry [jewels] gets excited, come here I’ll explain/Don’t think that you mmm.” As for “jewelry,” or “jewels,” let’s assume it refers to “the family jewels” (not to be confused with the Marina and the Diamonds’ 2010 album of the same name).
Although the song might have initially started out with a vibe that suggests Shygirl and Yseult are way too good to give the time of day (let alone their “WAPs”) to any inferior man, they quickly give in to a more “fuck this, I just want to fuck” attitude with a chorus that goes, “Fuck it, have me when you like/Have me anytime, like/Fuck it, have me when you like.” Though, later, Shy switches back to her “too cool for you anyway” armor by noting, “Won’t call and I won’t text back/I know a couple man that be into that/Independent like me, bitch/Watch me work it, I’m vibe rich/High quality or we bust/In the name of Shy we trust.”
In between picnicking, playing cards and having(/spilling) tea (lest anyone forget, Shygirl is British through and through), the duo saunters around the park, taking in its many sights. (And yes, for those who don’t know, the park is filled with them.) At certain moments, when the two approach the embankment of a lake, Ferina shoots the video from the “POV” of a swimming duck. Except it’s not exactly a conventional POV shot in that we can still see the duck’s head in the frame. Yet that’s just one of the many things that lends this video a particular kind of DIY grit and cachet.
Another actual POV shot from Shygirl’s view (in the style of the POV shots from Being John Malkovich) shows her lighting a cigarette (clearly, this must not be an American park). In other moments, Shygirl has a dog she’s walking/just kind of standing around with. But, like the men in her life, the dog doesn’t seem to be a permanent fixture.
Co-produced with Mura Masa (who has also worked with Shygirl’s touring cohort, Charli XCX), the up-tempo, sweltering dance rhythms accentuate the lyrical grandiloquence. And while it might not seem so on the surface, the “lo-fi” video is also an additional source of ramping up the casual bombast that Shygirl is known for. As for the men who can’t fuck worth a damn, well, they can go fly a kite (and not in the literal sense that Shygirl and Yseult do while hanging out in the park).
