On the heels of the single, “That Did It” featuring Tink, Sleigh Bells is now offering us “Champions of Unrestricted Beauty,” an upbeat ditty that celebrates the relishment of life’s simple pleasures and aesthetic delights. After so quickly releasing Bitter Rivals in 2013 after Reign of Terror in 2012, it seems as though the band has taken more time to ponder what they want to say for their next effort.
With this jubilant single, the message is quite clear: beauty often lies in or is achieved through imperfections, whether having them or appreciating them. As lead singer Alexis Krauss puts it, “You might be a champion of unrestricted beauty, but so often you fail/And that’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
The accompanying video displays a mixed bag of what one might construe as beautiful: from atomic explosions to football games to champagne glasses clinking. Yes, every form of beauty or beautiful ugliness is accounted for. And in this, Sleigh Bells is the true champion of unrestricted beauty.
