Taylor Swift, notoriously mum on all matters pertaining to politics as a result of her solid Christian fanbase (it goes hand in hand with the irony of “conservatives” worshipping the overt sex kitten but “good girl” dichotomy of someone like Britney Spears–essentially giving them a pass for “slut” behavior while wearing a cross), has, at long last, decided to express an affinity for the left in a lengthy post discussing her choice to vote for two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee.
While one would make the assumption that women prefer to vote for other women out of “solidarity,” the recent past has proven this to the contrary (e.g. the strange breed of females who somehow cast their vote for the Orange One instead of Hillary). What’s more, many an aging female politician has proven herself to be just as out of stride with what the (frontal lobe-possessing) public wants as any white man with sagging balls (the latest case in point, clearly, being, one, Susan Collins). As such, Swift has made it official that she does not support Republican Marsha Blackburn for reelection in Tennessee’s seventh congressional district, proving, as such, her “reputation” for being undercuttingly calculated in her moves, for this is all too well-timed to coincide with her arch nemesis Kanye West’s overly publicized devotion to a man who cares even less about black people than George W. Bush.
Considering that the “pop tart” also wrote an entire “opus” about how Kanye ruined her innocence, is responsible for all her trust issues and jaded her beyond repair, it would not be so far off the mark to assume she took just a little bit of pleasure in timing her grand “coming out” party regarding political ties to coincide with the current backlash against Kanye’s hyperbolically unhinged viewpoints. And maybe, just maybe, she finally realized that to lose an ally in the LGBTQ community would be to lose most of her credibility and potential for album sales when she hits her late thirties and forties and the tween/teen set stops giving a shit. So it is that she wrote (while, again, cunning in her choice to pair the words with an image of her “thoughtfully” posed on a bed styled in “linens” and attire intended to make her more relatable):
I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.
I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.
So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting!
One can almost feel her emotions trying to come out as she attempted to be emotional in writing this post, well-aware that she would be risking her very livelihood and relevancy (within the bumfuck territories that still cling to her country days) in this expression of remorse for the state of the country that has so often prompted her to sartorially and gustatorially showcase the American flag. The thing is, that saying, “Too little, too late” holds far more water than, “It’s never too late” in this particular instance. But, at the very least, further confirmation of our Bizarro World existence has come to shine through in a realm where Kanye loves Trump and Swift loves Southern Democrats (another oxymoron in the vein of “Republican female”).
